Photo Encaustic Artist Statement

Primordial Breath

Nancy Sanders art draws from her inward journey of personal introspection of deep
separation, transformation, and connectedness. It explores the mystery of human life
from a multidimensional context, providing the viewer with the possibility of self-reflection,
and therefore the possibility of reconciliation.

The composition of the work depicts the illusion of separation and the question of varying degrees of connection through its use of color, value, shape and texture shifts. The deep richness of the backgrounds suggests the primal place, or integrated oneness, from which
we all come, simultaneously juxtaposed against shifting, often non-delineated, diffuse form underscoring our various perspectives and states of being. These shifting forms offer a view
of various stages of manifestation and perceived separateness, while simultaneously providing a backdrop of connection. Primordial breath signifies our birth from oneness into various states of being in life where we perceive our separateness, only to realize and reconcile we are being held in the existence from which we originate.

The chosen media of photo encaustic allows for various delicate surface changes, lighting shifts, occlusion, and layering to offer shifting views and interpretations of the figure’s shape, while providing an overall field of integration and an interwoven backdrop. The photography
and specific paper together accept the encaustic painting and shift the media from being
a photograph into another integrated art form that is an entirely different original art object
in and of itself.
